At the end of July 2007 the F.C.I.P. team returned to Fiji for Project Phase 4. This phase ran for two months and saw the continuation of all projects with the exception of the work on nesting ecology, which was completed in phase 3. In addition to the continuing work we also initiated a bird survey on the island to determine avian assemblages, densities and habitat preferences. This was fascinating and we added some new bird species to the list but it required many early morning starts!
Even though it was the dry season we did get some heavy rain but most of the time it was just very windy with the trade winds whipping across Fiji from East to West. Thankfully our tents didn’t blow away but we had some wild boat rides to and from Yadua Taba through the waves.
Now that the 4 phases have been completed successfully, 2008 will be a year of analyzing the data and writing up the findings. These will be published in scientific journals and also used to inform future management decisions concerning the crested iguanas. |
